Our Sustainability Strategy

We strive to be a force for good, working towards a more sustainable and inclusive future for our customers, colleagues and society.  With a clear ambition to drive positive change, we've made key commitments to reduce our environmental impact, champion diversity and inclusion, uphold governance and support our communities.  These commitments shape our ESG strategy, which is built around four Big Goals.

We're taking action

Every step counts as we work towards our Big Four goals. We know we've still got a long way to go but here's what we've accomplished already:
  • We’re working hard to understand and tackle our impact on the environment and are supporting our customers with tools that help them transition to low carbon
  • We’ve developed and signposted resources to help with financial education and digital inclusion, with particular focus for vulnerable customers
  • Through our partnerships and strong links with our Virgin Money Foundation, we’re supporting charities and community organisations who operate at the heart of local communities
  • We’ve made external commitments to achieve net zero in our operational and financed emissions and we’re holding ourselves to account by being transparent about our progress

Responsible Lending

We're committed to supporting a sustainable and thriving economy through responsible lending.  By the end of 2027 we have a bold ambition to increase support for businesses working towards net-zero to 20% of our lending.

Increasing Financial Inclusion & Wellbeing

Our purpose-led approach to financial and digital inclusion is all about empowering and enabling our customers and those most vulnerable in society to gain digital access and the vital skills to better manage their finances. Through initiatives like Make £5 Grow, Turn2us, and the Good Things Foundation's Databank, Virgin Money proudly supports local communities.

Increasing financial inclusion and wellbeing

Our purpose-led approach to financial inclusion is all about looking to empower and enable those most vulnerable to gain digital access and vital skills to better manage their finances and to work towards the eradication of poverty premium for our customers. Find out about some of the things we've done to drive this forward:

  • Our Turn2us Benefits Calculator has enabled over 50,000 customers to identify an additional £4.5m in unclaimed benefits
  • Virgin Money Foundation has awarded 350 grants totalling more than £1.6million to initiatives located in the top 20% of the Index of Multiple Deprivation or Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation
  • Since the launch of our flagship schools programme – Make £5 Grow – more than 185,000 children have participated
  • First UK bank to join the National Databank with 50 stores offering a 20GB free data-loaded O2 SIM card to people experiencing data poverty

Helping make the transition to a low-carbon economy

We’re passionate about empowering and educating our customers, while offering products and services that help them lead more sustainable lives. Sustainability-linked loans, our greener mortgage proposition, carbon audits and the sustainable business coach have all been launched with sustainability in mind.  

So far we've:

  • Launched Agri E Fund - designed to support the environmental and efficiency needs of our agriculture customers
  • Achieved 57% increase in new greener mortgage lending in FY23
  • Reduced our financed emissions by ?%
